Stations of the Cross

The idea of following Christ’s last journey to the cross and stopping to pray at “stations” along the way originated during the time of the crusades with the early pilgrims visiting Jerusalem. It was extremely costly and even perilous to travel at that time and so the idea of recreating these devotions at home using pictures was born. Most of the Stations are based on biblical text, for example “Simon Of Cyrene helps Jesus carry his Cross” and “Jesus meets the Women of Jerusalem” but some have grown through tradition such as “Veronica wipes the face of Jesus”. (Veronica means true image). It is of course the meaning and prayer behind each station that matters more than whether they are evidenced in the bible or not.

You can now follow these devotions here on line using St. Wulfran’s own set of 14 “Stations of the Cross”

These were painted by four members of Ovingdean Arts Club, all of whom found the process took them on a spiritual journey, one which opened their hearts to the true meaning of Christ's Passion. Our pictures are only put on display for Holy week and Easter and have become an important part of our Holy week devotions. They are a wonderful way of following Christ’s Passion and the prayers link this in a powerful way to the present day and problems within our own lives.
